Sakura Wars

Synopsis

Based on the very popular Sega chain of video games, Sakura Wars fails to deliver the same experience that came from the games. For those who don't know the story behind Sakura Wars, I will explain it. Sakura Wars is a story set in the 1800's of Japan. Mainly new inventions have come about with the development of steam engines. It would seem as though Japan was having an age of prosperity, until we learn that demons are plotting against Japan, and its destruction. Therefore an old scientist has developed a new brand of mechs that are based on steam engine designs, however a major catch comes with these mechs only people with high levels of spiritual energy can man them. We soon learn that the scientist granddaughter Sumire, can pilot this one leaving us with the assumption that only girls can pilot them. Ironically this assumption is correct, so the military sends its main general who happens also to be a female to recruit young ladies to fight this new enemy.

Well eventually after about two episodes the cast finally is formed, and their teamwork is horrible so the General decides that in order for them to gain true focus on their energy and act as a team they will perform Broadway plays, while they also respond to city calls to defend the capital from the demons that threaten Japan. By the end of the last episode the girls eventually decided to get a male leader who happens to bring the group all together and fight as a team. The story is left somewhat unfinished, and we get a somewhat decent ending that lacks some big closure to the whole Ova series!

Review:

Overall this is not a very good anime at all, it looked very promising plot wise, but lacked in every department. First off the plot has many holes and really never explains anything clearly! So most of the time you end up having to figure out for yourself what is going on with the plot and the characters. They also failed to develop all the girls' character backgrounds; in fact they only go into somewhat detail with the main characters Sakura's background. The animation quality is fantastic, but can't make up for the lack of plot! As for the music it is somewhat bland the only thing that really happened to capture my ears, was a few classical scores, and the main theme to the Ova series the rest of the music is very unappealing and will turn many off! Overall I can not recommend Sakura Wars the Ova series movie, to any anime fan, it is a major disappointment to the video games, and had some potential in being a great film but does not deliver on many ends!

***Side note***

There is a Sakura Wars television series that is based off the ova's but it is also very disappointing and pretty much is a flop as well!
